The Oar House

A Little History

Friday Harbor is on San Juan Island, and is known as "a drinking village with a fishing problem." After the local brewery closed in 2008, it became "a drinking village with a drinking problem", as locals had to rely on mass produced, industrial beer, brought in on a ferry boat in warm bottles and cans. In 2015, Bob Williams and Mike Close took a trip off island on the ferry boat, and realized that there were breweries in every little village in America, sometimes up to 15 or 20. whereas Friday Harbor had not one. They heard a calling.

The BrewHouse

Our brew system consists of a 15 gallon Brew Magic system, a one pass Chiller, two conical fermenters, two bright tanks, 18 1/2 kegs, 12 1/4 kegs, and 12 corny kegs. The facility space was carved out of, and is surrounded by Friday Harbor Marine, which pretty well dictated the decor of "Nautical Miasma" characterized by the obsessive collection and display of marine related junk.

Bob and Mikes Excellent Adventure

This is an island, and paradise or not, we need to make sure that we have provided for all of the essentials. We determined that our specific island needed a brewery, and we further determined that we were the ones called upon to build it, in spite of the fact that we knew pretty much nothing about building a brewery. We did know a little bit about brewing beer, and we do know how to use the Google. Entered "DIY Brewery For Dummies", and got to work on the deal. November 2016, we sold our first pint of California Wild Ale to a Mr. Jack Cory, which, in hindsight, may have been a mistake, as he just won't leave us alone now.
